It happened at about 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28 northbound at exit M1 in Hempstead, state police said.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the collision occurred when the operator of a 2013 BMW X5 traveling northbound struck a 2018 Honda Civic, causing the Honda to exit the roadway onto the right shoulder, where it struck a steel light pole and came to rest, state police said.
The BMW continued northbound and struck a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser and a 2017 GMC Acadia that were also traveling northbound, according to police.
The GMC was forced into the center median where it came to rest. Both the BMW and Chrysler then continued a short distance northbound and came to rest in the center of the roadway.
The operator of the Chrysler, Samantha C. Shaw, 23, of Westbury, and the front passenger, Timothy J. Lafferty, 24, of Syosset, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The operator of the BMW, Thomas A. Bochichio, 22, of Massapequa Park, was taken to Winthrop University Hospital for minor injuries.
At this time, there have been no criminal charges filed, police said.
The New York State Police is requesting that anyone who may have witnessed this incident contact State Police Farmingdale at (631)756-3300. All calls will remain confidential.
